Glossary

Here it comes – the grand glossary of terms (un-alphabetised)

As promised in the past, here is the grand glossary of terms – this list is in no way finalised.

  • Plodge – the porters’ lodge.  This is the entrance to the college, and the first point of call for mail (see splodge)

  • Fitz – the shorthand for Fitzwilliam College
  • “The Bubble” – a term for Cambridge (only during term time)
  • CUJS – the Cambridge University Jewish Society (see link)
  • CUlanu – the Cambridge equivalent of a Hillel House
  • Pigs – the pigeon holes situated in the plodge (see plodge)
  • Buttery – the college canteen
  • Gyp Room – the shared kitchenettes on every floor of every staircase

The Subjects

  • CompSci – the subject and those who study Computer Science (“-Skee”)

Self-made Computing Terms

  • Gleeping – when the computer BSODs and reboots quickly (see BSOD)
  • Naffics-card – a very poor excuse for a graphics card (word originates from a GeForce 6200 that I had to use after my Radeon X800 XL packed it in)
  • Gar-bouse – a very poor excuse for a mouse. Specifically the recent Trust mouse
  • BSOD – Blue Screen of Death (yes, I know I didn’t come up with this one)
  • Hard Damned Drive (HDD) – a disk that’s decided to give up and commit Harakiri

More to come…
