Here it comes – the grand glossary of terms (un-alphabetised)
As promised in the past, here is the grand glossary of terms – this list is in no way finalised.
- Plodge – the porters’ lodge. This is the entrance to the college, and the first point of call for mail (see splodge)
- Splode – the southern porters’ lodge. In Fitz, this is the official plodge – the northern plodge is only for use by members of the college (see plodge)
- Fitz – the shorthand for Fitzwilliam College
- “The Bubble” – a term for Cambridge (only during term time)
- CUJS – the Cambridge University Jewish Society (see link)
- CUlanu – the Cambridge equivalent of a Hillel House
- Pigs – the pigeon holes situated in the plodge (see plodge)
- Buttery – the college canteen
- Gyp Room – the shared kitchenettes on every floor of every staircase
The Subjects
- CompSci – the subject and those who study Computer Science (“-Skee”)
- NatSci – the subject and those who study Natural Sciences (“-Skee”)
- MathMo – the subject and those who study Maths
- Lando – the subject and those who study Land Economy (read farming)
The Colleges
- Fitz – Fitzwilliam College
- Emma – Emmanuel College
- “Keys” – Gonville and Caius College
- Trin – Trinity College
- Trin Hall – Trinity Hall (College)
- Cats – St. Catharine’s College
Self-made Computing Terms
- Gleeping – when the computer BSODs and reboots quickly (see BSOD)
- Naffics-card – a very poor excuse for a graphics card (word originates from a GeForce 6200 that I had to use after my Radeon X800 XL packed it in)
- Gar-bouse – a very poor excuse for a mouse. Specifically the recent Trust mouse
- BSOD – Blue Screen of Death (yes, I know I didn’t come up with this one)
- Hard Damned Drive (HDD) – a disk that’s decided to give up and commit Harakiri
